Celebrate Every Day, Part 3

One of my best friends from high school (and still to this day) has had a tremendous influence on the past few years of my life.

She moved to D.C. after she graduated college, which was just before my junior year of college. We quickly became closer than we’d ever been, and I continued to look up to her. She’d joined the Junior League of Washington and made a lot of friends and that way, and so I, too, decided to join.

I joined in the spring of 2007 and began my provisional (training) year that fall. I’d graduated in 2005, but kept waiting to join, knowing I’d probably move to NYC at some point. Once I found out I’d be able to transfer my membership, I decided to bite the bullet and join. As I’ve mentioned before, I didn’t really find a group I clicked with in the D.C. League, but I decided to transfer my membership when I moved up here anyway.

[The other tremendous influence on my life MaryBeth had was deciding to get married in Aruba. Her wedding and asking me to be bridesmaid on the beach in Aruba was the catalyst that started my weight loss journey.]

I either could have loved the NYJL or hated it. Thankfully, I loved it.

I joined the External Communications Committee in the spring semester of 2009 and dove right in. By the end of that year, I was named vice-chair of my committee, and then chair a year later. Two years later, and my term is up. A few months ago, I applied to replace my “boss,” Julie, who sits on the Management Council as the Public Affairs Council Head. Her terms is up, and she has to roll off.

Today I found out that I will indeed be attempting to fill her shoes next year! Julie is one of the smartest people I know, and one of the people I admire most, so I have some pretty large shoes to fill here. It’s going to be a lot of work, but I am so excited to continue to help spread the word of the good work the NYJL is doing in the community. This work I do with the NYJL takes a lot of my time, but it is so incredibly fulfilling.

And our great events. (Which fund the community activities.)

So tonight, at a Junior League meeting, I celebrated. I try to find something to appreciate everyday, and this was definitely today’s!

What are you celebrating today?

Congrats!!! I actually have a JL related question for you. I live in Boston currently, but will be moving to NYC by the end of the summer. I was planning on joining the Boston JL this spring and then transferring to NY…however it sounds like training would not start until after I moved (the fall). I’m not sure if there are limitations to where you are in your training to transfer your membership. Should I just wait until next year?
