A few weeks ago, I wrote that I had joined the Hollaback Girls. I liked their idea of trying to improve on health blogs; there’s nothing wrong with improving, right?
But after an e-mail exchange today, it became clear that this group wasn’t for me.
Sure, their mission is to “rescue health blogs from the huge vortex of suck they seem to be swirling around.”
But for me, I think that while there may be a lot more that health bloggers are capable of, I don’t think anyone’s blog sucks, and if it does, I don’t really care. I started this blog for myself, and picked up a lot of followers along the way, but at the end of the day, this blog is still for me.
Which means I’m going to still post pictures of almost everything I eat. I don’t always post *everything* now, especially if it’s the same meal three days in a row, but hey, you can stop reading if you don’t want to see pics of what I eat. I try to make my captions funny sometimes, but sometimes I’ll just post a picture. Whatever. Sometimes I have tips that will help you, and I share them, but sometimes I’ll just be struggling to stay healthy (hello new job), but I share that, too.
I like Leah and Rachel’s styles, but I also like other bloggers’ styles, and I don’t think the two have to be mutually exclusive. I don’t think the genre being capable of more necessarily means that it sucks. Like I wrote earlier, I actually personally find a lot about the other bloggers to be inspirational; I enjoy the happiness that comes across in their writing.
So I’ll definitely continue to read about their efforts, and maybe take some of their tips, but this blog (and this person) will stay true to themselves.
*Pun intended.
