Accountability and Inspiration: Physique 57 and Girls on the Run

I really like Physique 57 because it’s a great workout, but I also really like it because their registration keeps me accountable.

Once you’ve registered, you can only cancel within 6-12 hours of a class or else you lose your money. And who wants to lose money?

I wasn’t always the most dependable person. In fact, when I lived in D.C., I was pretty flaky. I’ll chalk most of that up to being dumb, young and irresponsible. While Saturday was the first time I spoke on a panel, it wasn’t the first time I was asked.

I was asked a few times while living in D.C., but always canceled a few days before, saying a scheduling conflict had come up, because I was downright terrified. Old age and this blog have definitely kept me much more accountable for my actions, and I just don’t want to be that person. It’s easier to just do something than to make excuses for why you didn’t do it/aren’t going to do it.

And I also like Physique 57 for the socks, I’m not going to lie.

Inspiration

I’ve heard a ton about Girls on the Run from Laurel, the awesome Abby and from reading about Caitlin’s involvement with the group. If you’re unfamiliar with the group, it was founded by Molly Barker, a four-time Hawaii Ironman triathlete. She founded the program to teach 8-12 year-old girls confidence-building lessons through running. It started in 1996 in Charlotte, NC and has now expanded to 150 cities. It’s a really inspiring program that I’ve wanted to get involved with for awhile, but in trying to be realistic with my time, have accepted that I can’t add that on top of my already substantial Junior League commitment.

But! If you’re an NYC runner, they’re looking for buddies (to run with the girls) for their 5K on June 5. You can register here if you’re interested.

Food

Just the English muffin + sunflower butter for breakfast and soup for lunch. Nothing to see here!

  • Great post! Glad to see that you are keeping yourself accountable for your workouts and congratulations on speaking on your first panel for Social Media Weekend.

  • I volunteered at the Boston GotR 5k on Saturday! I had a great time helping out and cheering on the runners. I'm seriously considering fundraising for them, too.

  • I totally agree. I'm trying to be less flaky and stick to my word more. I used to be super reliable, but as my anxiety got worse, I found myself canceling out of fear. I've always hated committment, but I refuse to be the flake. You go girl.

  • I love that about signing up for classes, too! I've used an online sign up for these new yoga classes and once I'm registered for them it makes me stick with it. Love it!

  • I am definitely going to look into trying to sign up for classes online.. especially one that I am afraid to try.. then I've GOT to stick to it and conquer some fears!

  • I used to help out with Girls on the Run way downtown and honestly, I had to stop because I ran out of time but also because it wasn't the best neighborhood. To be honest, when it started getting dark out earlier (last fall/winter) I had to call it quits. I'm still waiting to a spot to open up in a division closer to me so I can volunteer. However, I am def looking into this running buddy thing!

Also, I'd love to try 57 but I really don't have the money. Do you have any experience with the DVDs? Are they worth it?

    • @Katherine: Physique definitely is not cheap--but when you sign up for your first class, you get a second one free, therefore making it ~$17 per class. (Still not cheap, but not bad.)

I haven't tried the DVDs again since I tried the in-person class, so it's not really a fair comparison (maybe I need to try the DVDs again!), but I do remember it being a good workout.

  • Hey! So I have GOTR on my blogging calendar this week too! I just registered as a running buddy for the 5k! Hope to see you at p57 soon!

  • Maybe a litle stubborn at times, yes young and you didn't have much responsibilty, but you learned how to be responsible you've come a long way Baby.
Dad and I worried about you all the time, But never no never Dumb, you were always
smart, it just took you a while to figure out how to use
    that beauty and brains!!!!

    Love you
    Mom

  • I am a GOTR coach in NOVA and we just had our 5K race last weekend and it was fabulous! I highly highly recommend it to any women that are looking for a fulfilling volunteer experience. I won't be able coach next year since I'll be super busy in PT school but I definitely plan to be a buddy runner :)
