How ‘Bout Them Cockles?

Yesterday, after the Social Media for Nonprofits conference, I still had to run. I’ve been waking up early (by some miracle) since getting laid off, but I haven’t had to be anywhere super-early, so getting in an early run because I needed to just wasn’t happening yesterday.

So in between the conference (recap later) and dinnertime, I needed to work in a little run. I told my coach that repeating the 6-7 milers twice a week was getting a little soul-crushing, so I’m now doing one 6-miler, 1 day of speedwork and 1 short run day, in addition to my long run. I’ve always run three days a week, so I’m just hoping not to get injured. (I think I’ll be okay.)

Yesterday’s run was a three-miler. YES! A short run was just what I needed to feel pumped up again.

Oops. I ran fast.

It was too pretty a day not to, and I was feeling too good not to, so I did. I run because I can.

I had plans to go to Ashley’s for dinner, and Bo had asked me to pick up some clam juice.

I underestimated my route, so I stopped at 2.8 miles, walked into the grocery store, grabbed clam juice and ran .2 miles home with the clam juice in hand. I don’t know how I didn’t drop it, but I didn’t.

I took the quickest shower of my life, and headed to Ashley and Bo’s for dinner and to work on our HLS presentation. We’re going to be talking about, with Cynthia, how to use the Internetz to make friends.

Bo made us a nice little salad.

And some delicious linguine with clam sauce, since they were both going on their long runs today. I loved the parsley and the red pepper flakes, even if Bo was a wee bit heavy-handed on the red pepper 😉

How have you used the Internet to make friends? Leave a comment, and we might include it in our presentation.

  • I don't like anybody I met on the internet. KIDDING. <3 you.

I can't think of good comments under pressure, but if I think of something awesome to say I'll let you know. ;)

  • Honestly, the fear I always have is that I'll seem different in real life vs. the internet. I usually let that hold me back from jumping from one to the other... I end up with virtual friends, and real life friends that are in two different places in my life. Kinda sad that I let that fear of disappointing someone by not being exactly what the expect hold me back. :( You made me think about that a little more than I have lately, so now I feel like I should tackle that obstacle. THANKS! :)

  • i had a blog on myspace for like 3+ years & in that time i amassed a small group of followers (+/- 30 peeps) & ill be damned if some of them didnt become super close friends. some of them a lot closer than my "flesh & blood" friends. in fact my friend marja, i would now consider to be my best friend (& when youre in your 40's that title actually takes on some real significance).

in fact after corresponding multiple times daily for four years, sharing lifes ups & downs, we are finally meeting face to face (she lives in MD & i live in ND)in october when she flies to my vacation home in AZ for a long weekend. we've been planning it for awhile now & wouldve done it sooner, but shes recently changed jobs & moved, etc... we honestly couldnt be more excited.

i credit social media for helping me make friends from all over the country who didnt grow up w/ me in my small town & dont know about that time in 9th grade where i took my class pictures w/ a green fruity pebble stuck to the front of my sweater. i care about these people & their lives. were there for each other. its a nice feeling.

  • I hear you on the soul crushing 6-7 milers. My route during the week is getting so boring, but it is too early in the morning to venture somewhere else.

  • Before college started I looked up people on facebook that were also going to the same school and I friended them!

  • its interesting. I have made some good friends (the kind you were in the wedding, are auntie to the 2 year old and you'd bury a body for :)) and more than a handful of acquaintances from the internet (blog, flickr etc.) around the world (I even went to visit on in Australia!) but I think the most important thing I have learned about making friends from the internet is that anytime there is a group dynamic it just doesn't work for me. There is something that in my experience with bigger groups (talking 8-10 people that are CLOSE) that I just don't click with. I can pick my one or two and do things on our own, but big group gatherings... not been my thing :)

    • @Kayla @ learningtosayyes.com: Bonding with people in big groups can definitely be hard. One of the things we're going to talk about in our presentation is to just find a few people to talk with, rather than trying to follow the entire conversation.

  • I used the internet to make friends via the weddingbee. Planning a wedding in 6 months was tough, weddingbee was my source for everything. They have a local board and one of my new friends gave me a great recommendation for a salon in a very last minute situation. When I was done with my wedding I had some extra stuff that I gave to her and we've been real life friends since then. My husband thinks it's weird that I "have a friend from the internet" but she's pretty awesome and I wouldn't have met her if it weren't for the interwebs.

  • Finding friends? I used it to find a husband. LOL...well really that was coincidence. He randomly messaged me on Myspace because he was bored and we apparantly had lots in common (hating sushi and loving pancakes). 6 months later we met in person. And found out we had NOTHING in common. (except we both the sushi/pancake thing). But hey, maybe thats why we find each other interesting still, 5 yrs. and one overadventurous toddler later! It's amazing the friends I've met just by sending a random silly message to someone I don't know. Some of these friends have remained online only but some have turned into decade long friendships.
