Making the Best of My Days

My workdays are usually relatively interesting (or, at the least, never dull!), but if I’m working long hours, I want to make the most of my time outside of work.

Today accomplished that.

This morning, I ran with Sarah Reinertsen, the first woman with a prosthetic leg to finish the Ironman Kona.

I learned that I never have any excuse to not run ever again. I have both legs. I have my health. Sarah also gave me some tips on my upcoming tri, including looking up about every 5 strokes or so to see who’s in front of me.

I also learned that, if I really want to, I can run in Central Park before work (although it’s sort of a pain to get up there and back unless I catch the train right and I can’t also dry my hair before I go to work, which bothers me more than it should.)

After work, I headed to meet some blogger buddies at a Brooks event.

They had a race. I won.

I got to see Jess, which is always awesome, especially now that she’s stopped stalking me and we don’t see each other as much. I got to see Meghann, which is also always nice.

But it was really great to meet Jenn from Fitbottomed Girls, especially since FBG named me to their list of their favorite healthy food blogs today! It was also so nice to meet Janae from Hungry Runner Girl, who is probably the sweetest person I’ve ever met. Picture her sweet self from her blog and then multiply it times like a million.

The girls are all Brooks Ambassadors, and the non-NYC ones are staying at the Ace Hotel. We were going to go to the Breslin for dinner, but it was packed, so we went to Hill Country.

Yup. I took the blogger who added me to her favorite healthy food blogger list to a BBQ joint.

Hill Country is somewhere between sit-down and quick service. You are seated by a host, but then you get up and get your BBQ and bring it back to your table.

I got some lean brisket and mac and cheese and bourbon sweet potato mash for sides.

And between Carolina BBQ in OBX, the Big Apple BBQ this weekend and this tonight, I’m done with BBQ for awhile.

As a girl who grew up in NJ, went to school in DC and lives in NYC, I won’t even pretend I really know much about BBQ other than that it’s tasty. So, fight amongst yourselves: Carolina BBQ? Brisket? Memphis BBQ?

  • Carolina BBQ!
Let's just disregard the fact that I'm a vegetarian for a few minutes. I have to support my home state!

  • what a fun running-inspired day! you picked right with Hill Country- coming from Billy's expertise on BBQ, it's the only BBQ place in NYC that he has given approval. I like that they have several different meat and side options. we used to go there back in the day during football season to watch UT play- I'm sure we'll be there again this fall! xo

  • I am so jealous of basically EVERYTHING you did! Sarah Reinertsen is amazing (met her at a 50 states club meeting a few years ago), I really want to meet both Jenn and Janae, AND while I had (real Texas) barbecue last night, it was nowhere near as good as Hill Country.

    Happy Thursday!

  • I'm from Nevada, so I don't claim to know anything about BBQ. But I do know this makes me want to go back to the Hill Country location in DC!

  • What a fun looking day you had. I wish we had great places and events like that where i live. It sounds like you had a great time.

  • It kills me when I can't blow dry my hair before work too! I try to vary tje days I do morning work outs just because I hate going to work with sloppy hair!

  • I remember, on my first ski trip, I was throwing a total strop on the slope because I was so scared and this guy skied past me with no legs. He had two hand skis and was sat on a bottom ski, if that makes any sense, and he flew past me with no legs. I shut up and made it to the bottom.

People like that, and like your lady with the prosthetic leg, they humble us, make us shut up and make it to the end - it's such a good reminder to be grateful and to stop moaning!!!

Your day sounds amazing - busy and brilliant!!
