I am a New York runner, and I’ve run the New York Marathon once, and I’ll probably run it again. This means I’ve run a whole bunch of New York Road Runners races.
While NYRR definitely has a monopoly on NYC road races, NYC Runs is becoming more of a player in town. They even have a marathon, the Brooklyn Marathon.
And they have a Fourth of July race! I’m going down the shore (but not Snooki style) with my mom on Thursday, but I’ll be around tomorrow. Ashley and I were chatting about the race, and trying to decide if we’d do it or not.

NYRR races are like a well-freaking-oiled machine, but there are only so many times I can run in the park without getting a little antsy. This race is on Roosevelt Island, that island between Manhattan and Queens.
I’ve never been there, so I convinced Ashley its novelty would be fun.
As for a race plan, I don’t know if it’s possible to PR again after PR-ing so recently–especially considering the race starts at 9, and it will be hot. I also don’t want to mess anything up so close to marathon training, and I was kinda sore after my last 10K.
What would you do? (And are you running a Fourth of July race–or have any other Fourth of July fitness plans?)

It's a weird little island, so hopefully it's not a crowded race. Otherwise, I say warm-up before the race and go for the p.r. What do you have to loose?
I'm running this race, too. I wanted to make sure I get a run in and I have never been to Roosevelt Island, so I am intrigued. It will be the first NYC Runs race I run (not the first one I've registered for). It's going to be hot and humid. I ran the Queens 10K.. That started at 8 and it was a challenge. It felt like a half. I wouldn't aim for a PR tomorrow. Use it as a solid training run. You can PR some other time when the humidity and heat are more bearable. The next PR will come. No reason to risk heat issues or injury tomorrow.
Have a great "race" - just don't race it!
I ran a NYC runs race on Roosevelt island a couple months ago and it was awesome. Really easy to get to, the races are more laid back than the nyrr races in the park, and the island is beautiful. Defintely worth checking out and running a race there at some point if not tomorrow!
Do it, but for fun not a PR. Go out to enjoy yourself, have a training run in new surroundings, see a friend and to justify brunch afterwards.
That sounds like so much fun! What a cute island, lol. Definitely go for it but for fun.
ooh. I can't wait to hear how this race went! There weren't any races in New Orleans today so I just ran on my own.
Fun way to spend the 4th!
I won't be running but I will be partaking in my own 4th of July athletic tradition: watching the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest on ESPN. It's uh-MAZING and commentary is delightful. Example "This guy really knows the difference between coos and couscous." HE SAID THAT.
Have a great run!
I had a 5 miler yesterday. :)
