A Vacation for the Afternoon

Yesterday, my high school buddy Sara convinced me to come out to Brooklyn for lunch. We’ve known each other for 16 years (whoa), so you don’t say no to someone who has plenty of blackmail material.

I’m currently working from home with as a social media consultant (looking for a full-time gig too), so while I have the freedom to do things like this, I rarely do, choosing usually to glue myself to my computer, working, only occasionally sneaking out for a lunchtime workout or lunch or coffee meeting.

But yesterday I just couldn’t say no to a slightly longer lunch out in Brooklyn and went to meet Sara for lunch.

She promised “a vacation for the afternoon,” and delivered.

Right? We went to Brooklyn Crab in Red Hook, and if I had been kidnapped and blindfolded and dropped off here, I would not have thought I was in Brooklyn, or anywhere near New York City. I posted this one to Instagram with the caption “BK or vacay?”

I wasn’t originally thinking about blogging about lunch, so I didn’t take a picture of what I ate, but I had a crab roll, which was delicious (but still no lobster roll.)

The restaurant has three levels, and we sat on the top level, since it had the best view.

On the bottom level, they have mini-golf and cornhole!

We walked down by the pier after lunch, and could see Manhattan, Staten Island, Governor’s Island and the Statute of Liberty all from our vantage point.

I’d never been to Red Hook before (no, we did not go to Ikea), so it was fun to have a quick little afternoon jaunt that was totally different from a typical lunch.

What do you do when you want to take a vacation for the afternoon?

  • I am just like you- even though I have my freedom in terms of making my schedule during the weekdays, I keep myself to a strict schedule of working, eating lunch at home or bringing it with me to wherever I am working from. Lately though I have loosened the reigns and have been escaping a bit too! I would never know that was Brooklyn - how awesome. I recommend your next escape be out here on the island at Prime in Huntington for lunch! So beautiful and good food too.

  • The weather is so nice right now, I think I would head to a park, catch some rays and have a picnic! Then go for a nice walk along the lake with my pup. And maybe throw in a pedicure or something :)

  • I live just south of San Francisco so for an afternoon vacation I would take the ferry to Sausalito for ice-cream in the endless sunshine they have up there!!! I fancy doing that today actually!!'

  • Awesome! I'm going to Bklyn in fall the RnR 10K-- may have to stop by for dinner! Obviously first post run meal will be pizza. :)

  • I love afternoon vacations. Sometimes I choose to lay outside with a book and be lazy! Other times I like to walk with a friend and then get coffee or frozen yogurt.

  • I am going to NYC for the first time in ages for the long weekend...this makes me so excited!! Any recommendations of places to hit up while I'm in the Big Apple??

  • I do miss the flexibility of a freelance schedule. I have to admit I'm a bit jealous! For random "off" afternoons, I usually try to fit in a solid pup walk, an iced coffee and a late afternoon yoga class at a different yoga studio than normal. Just things that bring me some peace and joy really!

  • I may bring my husband to try this! He loves seafood and I hate it, but I like to surprise him with fun seafood spots. I like to jet out to Jone's Beach, even if it's just for the afternoon! (35 minute drive = pure beach bliss)

  • I like to treat myself on those rare stolen mornings or afternoons away! This morning my fiance and I went to get our marriage license (AHHHH) so we celebrated with a nice brunch together before I headed back to work and reality. It was nice to get to take a breath and live in the excitement of the moment for a few before heading back to the real world!

PS: Hope all is well working from home! I must have missed something along the way there, didn't know you had left your position!

    • @Ashley: no, you didn't miss anything--it's a little too complicated to really address. Freelance is not ideal for me right now but I'm making the best of it!
