The Novelty of It

This morning, as I biked up to meet Jen, I thought about what a nice change of pace it was. How I am truly loving tri training.

How humbling it is!

I’ve been running for five years, and I’ve run four marathons and nearly 30 half marathons. I know a thing or two about running. I know so little about swimming and biking, but I’m loving learning about it.

And I love the novelty of it. A few years ago, a coworker accused me of only being so into fitness because it was novel to me. Well, guess what, buddy? That’s the secret. Keep it fun, keep changing it up.

Right now, I’m adding cycling + swimming to my running equation, but if you’re a runner, you can always do more speedwork or add more mileage, or any of a number of things to mix it up.

For me, I’m going to keep giving this tri thing a try. It’s pushing me out of my comfort zone every day and making me stronger mentally and physically. And I’m still FIERCELY in love with my new bike.

Do you have the attention span of a gerbil for fitness and need to mix it up often, too? Do you live in NYC and cycle? (Total non-sequitir, just looking for some cycling buddies!)

  • I'm a runner and definitely enjoying changing things up. I've completed 3 half marathons and am training for my first full (Chicago in October!) but I've also been changing things up by adding CrossFit into the mix. I've surprised myself on how much I enjoy it and it's been a great balance to all the running....who knew? ;)

  • I'm with you on switching things up! I run a lot, but I also add in random classes, YouTube videos (I love the Tone It Up ones!) and add speedwork and intervals into my runs so I don't get bored. I don't know how people do the same workouts all the time!

  • I'm not so much all over the place because of attention span, but there's SO many great things I love and wish I had time for them all, so I guess that's why I mix it up so much. I just LOVE endorphin's and can't imagine my life without health and fitness. I think it's amazing you've done so many half marathons and marathons now...you inspire me and have for years!! Thank you. :) xo, Jess
