Another Kind of Workout

Yesterday morning, I woke up with the sun and rode up to Central Park to get a good 1.5 hour ride in before work.

By 3pm, my coworkers and I boarded a bus to go to Crystal Springs for our company retreat. I had never been on a company retreat before, so I was very curious about what we were getting ourselves into.

Well, when you work for a fitness company… it will probably involve fitness.

After breakfast this morning, it was time for us to leave for The Amazing Race, DailyBurn style.

We ran up and down trails, swatted away ALL THE BUGS, answered company trivia and did random physical challenges.

You know, like kayaking out to pick up some ping pong balls and then putting them in some weird PVC pipe structure.

This game was fun, too. You had to pick up a piece of paper, but only one person can be in the circle at a time.

SEE PEOPLE! NJ can be pretty! (Some of it.)

I am not a woodsy person in the least, so the bugs drove me nuts, but eventually I got more comfortable around them. I should have worn a watch, but the organizers’ estimates were that our route was somewhere between 4-6 miles, which I’m happy with.

Every day, I count my blessings and consider myself so happy to work for a company I love and truly believe in with amazing coworkers who feel the same. And who organize retreats like this that allow us to work out outside on a Thursday, Um, OK 🙂

What’s your favorite non-traditional workout you’ve done lately?

  • That sounds like so much fun! I've always thought that doing an Amazing Race type event with friends would be a lot of fun especially if the challenges were tough but not impossible! I am not a fan of annoying bugs either so would have been right there with you!

  • I LOVE non traditional anything, so your post was right up my alley!
My favorite memory would be working out in the philippines. We went on a jungle adventure to sorta 'hunt for gold.' Not really but it felt like it. It involved racing, uphills, swinging, trying not to die haha. Super fun.

  • ahhh this looks like so much fun! i'd love to work for a fitness company, or an outdoorsy organization... i'm def a woods/outdoorsy person (and living in NYC...i know, something seems off there?). i'm also dying to go on the Amazing Race for reals -- life dream.

  • Nothing better than loving your job...I am soooo not an outdoorsy person that it is a wonder I choose to run outside instead of indoors on a treadmill. I hate hiking, and trails and bugs. How did I go to camp all those years as a kid, not a clue.

  • That looks awesome...
The only workouts I've had lately are mile walks on crutches (no my arms aren't getting buff - if anything I'm losing muscle) and I did toe taps on a 4" stair

  • This looks like so much fun! we had a retreat recently...it involved going to our downtown office and being stuck inside a conference room. I want to know who's brilliant idea that was to call it a retreat.

  • Planting trees in my CT yard turns out to be a strength training marathon. Digging, lugging rocks, and muscling 6-foot trees with huge root balls. It was quite a workout!

  • I went camping this weekend and I am ok with bugs but the mosquitoes really bit me up. walking around the campsite and doing a hike every day was the best part of the wknd and a great way to get a workout.

  • Sounds like a cool retreat. I used to work at a camp and we occasionally hosted work retreats. We had a blast laughing at the city slickers who were so uncomfortable in the woods.

New Jersey ain't all bad, especially South Jersey with its farmlands, the Pine Barrens, and the shore.

    • That was ABSOLUTELY me. City slicker panicking with the bugs. I'm from NJ so I believe it! But not everyone does :)
