My Summer Running Essentials

This post is sponsored by Neutrogena.

Better late than never, I’m back in the marathon training and long run game.

And I couldn’t be happier. In my 32 years on this earth, the only hobby that’s brought me as much joy as running is tennis.

I ran my first marathon in 2010 and got into the groove of Saturday morning runs, and training through the heat of the summer. Like, what else would I do with Saturday summer mornings?

One part I love about running is the ritual. In an amazingly unpredictable city like NYC, running gives me something I can look forward to. The route may change, the buddy my change, but the joy is consistent. Even a bad run still makes me feel better.

One of my OG running buds is back!

I really picked an awesome time to recover from my injury and hop back into training. The dog days of August in NYC are hot and humid and sunny. And now that I’m in my 30s, more than ever, it’s important to me to protect my skin — both for my vanity and and for my health. I really enjoy spending time in the sun, so I need to be sure to take care of my skin.

For years, I’ve tried to get into wearing sunblock while running and just couldn’t (I know, I know…). I hated that most sunblocks would feel like they were clogging my pores or just sitting all sticky-like on top of my skin. NO GOOD.

Well, I have a new product to add into my long-run must haves! Neutrogena sent me their new CoolDry Sport Sunscreen with Micromesh technology. That technology is supposed to let you sweat through the sunscreen so that your skin can feel cooler as you run. On a really freaking humid run last weekend, i can report that it absolutely did cool me down. It was sort of a trippy feeling to feel the cool sweat bead off of me, but it felt way better than some clammy sunscreen clogging up my pores.

And staying cool and protecting yourself from the sun helps you #PushFurther — what are you doing to push yourself further this summer?

  • As a 100% irish person with SUPER fair skin, i'm a year round always sunblock user. special stuff for my face, different stuff for different purposes.... its like the one thing i ALWAYS remember.

To push myself, I've been biking to work more days than not, hitting all my runs AND starting early for my long long runs so that I don't frrryyyy!

  • I've been really impressed with Neutrogena lately. Just spent a week in Myrtle Beach and didn't burn at all, which is really something.

Question: what Saucony's do you have?

  • Interesting, I'm going to have to give that stuff a try! I resigned myself that no sunscreen will last through marathon training in DC, particularly when I'm already soaked by mile 10.

Yea...what else is there to do on Saturday mornings, really?!

  • I really wanted to like this sunscreen, but it breaks my face out. I've still been using it on my arms and legs, but I have to use a different sunscreen on my face.

    • Yeah - I will say the caveat that I didn't use it on my face. I generally think any sprays are probably too much for my face and stick to ones specially formulated for your face.
