I Need a Plan

Last we spoke, I was super frustrated with myself for having not run the half marathon this weekend.

Monday morning came, and I snoozed through my alarm again, even more frustrated with myself. WTF, Theodora? Get your act together.

I know that working out in the morning makes me more calm and more focused at work, so I was extra frustrated at myself for not doing that at the beginning of what I knew was going to be another intense week. Knowing that and knowing I didn’t do that made me even more frustrated.

And then I ended up finding some old Junior League photos of myself and wishing I still looked like that ^.

But wishing doesn’t get anything done, right?

Part of why I’m extra busy at work lately basically involves a lot of retooling our social media strategy. It’s a lot of work, but I really enjoy planning and putting together strategies…so being in that mindset, it finally just clicked: I need to plan things to feel like I have them under control.

So I sat down with the ClassPass schedule and my running schedule:

Monday: It was already late in the day, so I decided just to do one of our 365 workouts at work since the lovely Anja was leading it and I knew it’d be a sweatfest. I didn’t have a ton of time, either, and I was trying to not let perfect be the enemy of good.

Tuesday: Uplift at 6:30am

Wednesday: 4 mile run

Thursday: Yoga in the morning

Friday: Run with Nike Run Club — they usually cover about 4-5, so I want to do 1-2 more miles on my own before or after

Saturday: cleaning up a park all day for NYJL

Sunday: Long run — 8 miles

And…I feel better.

What about you? Are you a planner?

  • I have been slacking on running as well. So last night I texted my running bff's for a 5 am run. And all is well in my life!

  • omg yes. i was feeling a little rudderless and my go to thing to do (when my ankle isn't sprained, which thankfully its not) is to look at races. having structure makes me feel a lot better/happier. i do the exact same thing.

  • it's all about doing what works for you and knowing what you need to make changes! hope this jump-starts your confidence in your ability to crush the workout goals and runs again. i like having a running plan to at least loosely follow for a marathon, and i'm pretty good about knowing the day before what i want to do for a workout the next day...but i don't take any classes, which is one thing i'd like to change. just don't have the $ or time right now!

  • I think you look amazing both now and in the NYJL photo. I could tell you not to compare the "then you" to the "now you", but if be a hypocrite.

I try to plan but don't always stick with it! I did just plan out my NYCM training, so we'll see how that goes!

  • I'm such a planner and find it super calming to write out my game plan of workouts + other events and things for the week on Sunday evenings.

  • I definitely like having a plan it is so helpful when life gets crazy to just know what you are doing! I've been running lots of halfs this spring and running is most of my workouts as in 6 days a week usually. My boyfriend was complaining about his new job and hours and I was like sit down and plan it in your schedule just like you do meeting up with friends etc. From my losing weight days it is just ingrained in my mindset to get up and workout but knowing ahead of time or readjusting to changes, writing it all down is key.

  • I am definitely a planner. I often change or break those personal plans, but making them is one step towards sanity in my hectic and busy life! I love to plan out my weekly workout schedule, and I of course plan out my weekly blogging schedule to make sure I keep up on all of those tiny details.

    • I REALLY need to try to plan out more blog stuff! Other than sponsored stuff, 99% of the time, it's completely on a whim.

      • @Theodora Blanchfield: Oh I try to make a plan, but I definitely didn't say I follow through on it ;) Half the time I make all of these awesome scheduling plans, and then completely change them or run behind. But it's the thought that counts, right?

  • I am a total planner. It's nice to see you back to your roots with blogging. You've got this!

  • I'm so glad I'm not the only one who struggles with this! I NEED to become an AM workout -er (that's definitely not a word), and struggle to make it happen. I plan spin 2x a week at night with my fiance, but outside that cannot seem to get my $hit together on this. This is motivation to make it work!
