That Time I Went to a Sheep Farm

I’m back with more adventures from my trip!

I don’t even recall where the idea to stay on a farm came from, but omg am I glad we did! Just as an FYI, I’m not writing these posts in the order of our itinerary.

Our trip to New Zealand was…logistically challenging, to put it mildly. I’ll write about this when I write about that part of the trip, but in short: it took us three different airports and missing our planned night in Brisbane in order to leave Airlie Beach, where we were before NZ.

We landed around 12:30 AM Christchurch time (which, btw, 3 hour time difference from Sydney) and had an hour-long drive ahead of us to get to the sheep farm. This is a really good first time to drive on the other side of the road, no?? Well, spoiler alert: I lived. By the time we’d picked up the car and our bags and made the drive, it was nearly 2am.

But we woke up to this, so all was okay. Also, this bed was amazing and I could have stayed in it for days.

And we woke to the sound of a single sheep, bleating. Toto, we are definitely not in NYC any more.

Karen and Bruce, the owners, had put out this lovely spread of food.

None of my photos quite did the kitchen justice, but it was straight out of a Pinterest dream.

Once we finished breakfast, it was SHEEP TIME!!!

And we got to feed them!! The one in the middle lost interest in me when I was done feeding him. FINE.

So. Many. Sheep.

Not just any sheep farm — we stayed at an award winning one!

10/10, would sheep again.

  • Love that you came to the South Island of New Zealand. I have been reading your blog for years but thought you were only going to Australia. I live an hour south of Christchurch, can I ask which area you stayed in on the sheep farm. So pleased you loved our country

    • hi! I didn't realize I forgot to actually name the place! It's called Karetu Downs, and it was in Hawarden? So...your country was gorgeous and amazing, but (and I'll write more about this in my Marlborough post) good god was the driving, um, interesting. Especially since we had to drive through the mountains instead of on the coastal highway to get up to Marlborough from there.

  • Australia is so far from anywhere except for NZ, lucky it's a wonderful place! I went last year to do a trail marathon, there is so much great running in NZ.

  • That's such a far away place, it looks nice though! I've been running in cold weather lately because of my location, but I have to get my good runs in! I've been losing so much weight with the information I've been getting from your posts it's great. Also this diet plan I've been following has given me great results. There's this person that did a review about it, feel free to check it out.
