Hold on to These Moments As They Pass

Do you remember that Counting Crows song “A Long December?”

The song is pretty horrible, but there is one great line: I can’t remember all the times I tried to tell myself to hold on to these moments as they pass.

In February, my friends (also known as the greatest people in the world) took me to Puerto Rico for a surprise 30th birthday trip. As I jumped through the waves, that lyric hit me. This was a perfect moment, and I wanted to hold onto it, bask in it and never let it go. I think I actually started tearing up, realizing what a perfect moment it was. Sure enough, it’s 9 months later and our lives have all changed a lot: one of us has moved to Geneva, one’s contemplating a move to Colorado, one’s pregnant, one moved in with her boyfriend and one (me!) started a new job.

The stress of most of this year has made the good stuff recently so much sweeter, and I’ve had a number of those moments lately, too.

Friday night, I hopped on the Path to Jersey City to meet Dori and take advantage of a ridiculous promo going on at Target. They were buying back any old iPad for $200. I had a first-generation one that felt as heavy as my laptop and was going to ask for a Mini for Christmas, but this deal was too good to pass up. When they gave me the gift card for the trade-in, “Value: $65” popped up on the screen before the associate did the override. SWEET. I love my little Mini. Now to get it a cute case…

Yesterday, I had my Junior League run club. We did a nice, easy, chatty four miles in the park and then went to the Central Park Boathouse for brunch.

We sat by the windows overlooking the water, and someone remarked what a beautiful, perfect day it was. I got the warm fuzzies as I thought about how tourists flock to New York for views like that, and how lucky I was that that was just part of my regular Saturday with friends.

My job is awesome on 17 million levels, but one part of the awesomeness is that my buddy Emily works in the same building. When she stopped downstairs on Friday with this little muffin, she told me she was going to brunch with Leticia and asked if I wanted to come. I

‘m trying really hard to not overschedule myself, so I originally said no, but hopped up on coffee, a mimosa and endorphins after brunch yesterday, I texted her that I wanted to crash brunch.

We went to The Smith, where I got prosecco and potato chips, because they obviously go together. We sat and laughed and laughed and laughed, and I even ran into another friend there. I got back on the subway, smiling.

I snuggled with Bailey for a while, before heading out for a quick blowout before heading to Fall Fete, a Junior League event we host yearly to raise funds to benefit our Playground Improvement Project.

I still really need to learn how to use a curling iron or straightener so I can do this myself. I got my dress from Rent the Runway, and I do not want to send it back.

And now I’m heading out for a bike ride with Jen before getting some work done this afternoon.

I’m savoring every moment.

A Random Day in the Life: 10.2.13

A few months ago, I asked what y’all wanted to see me post more about. Some of you said a “day in the life” post.

I hesitated, since a day in the life right now is not indicative of my normal routine…but I guess, like a lot of other blog stuff, it’s more like a snapshot of my life right now.

I’m currently freelancing but looking for another full-time job, so this is different from my “regular” routine. Once I’m back at a “9-5” (heavy emphasis on the quotations, I live in NYC), I’ll write another post like this about what a “9-5” day looks like for me.

3-4:30am: Wake up worried about the day ahead, text Ashley, thankful for a friend many time zones ahead of me who’s awake.

4:30-6:30am: Fall back asleep by some miracle!

6:30-7:00am: Wake up, shower.

7:00-7:15am: Walk Bailey.

7:15-7:25am: Get a wonderful french vanilla hot coffee from 6′ Donuts and a banana from my fruit cart dude.

7:25-9:45am: Prep for big meeting.

9:45-10:00am: Hair, makeup, getting dressed for meeting.

10:00-10:20am: Walk to meeting, talk to mom.

10:30-11:45am: BIG MEETING.

11:45am-12:30pm: Lunch with friend who works near meeting.

12:30-12:45: Walk home.

12:45-1:30: Work on follow-up emails, other freelance client work.

1:30-1:45: Walk Bailey again.

1:45-3:00: More working on freelance work, catching up on email.

3:00-3:30: Travel uptown for a Junior League meeting with communications and fundraising staff. I enjoy the volunteer work I do for Junior League tremendously, but it’s also great professional experience for me, too, and I’ve met a gazillion awesome people. Spend time on subway catching up on email.

3:30-5:15: Meeting. Knock out lots and lots of stuff.

5:15-5:30: Walk over to Soul Cycle, get changed.

5:30-6:15: Best 45 minutes of my day on the bike with Tomas.

6:15-6:30: Attempt to look like a normal human again.

6:30-6:50: Back on subway downtown, catching up on email.

6:50-7:00: Take a wonderful 10 minutes to just sit down near the Flatiron building and chill out.

It’s easy to live a really hectic life in this city and not realize the amazing opportunities the city offers, but yeah, it’s pretty awesome. When I take a minute to slow down, I really appreciate living here and can’t imagine living anywhere else in the world. Grace from Stripes and Sequins wrote a great post the other day on living a “calm life.” Some weeks I am go-go-go, but some weeks I completely retreat at night and spend lots of time in my yoga pants with Bailey. I try to say no when I can, but sometimes it’s hard to say no to the exciting things this city offers.

7:15:8:45: Stop by one of Uplift’s Workout+Wine events. I started off working with them as a blog partnership but have become actual friends with them because they are awesome, so stopped by to support them and hang out. It’s a wedding event, so I have zero reason to be there but to support my Uplift buddies and do a little networking. End up seeing Melissa and a former coworker and having lots of fun.

8:45-:9:15: Walk Bailey again.

9:15:9:45: Blog about my lame day.

9:45-???: Catch up on life. In my freelance life, I very rarely spend this much time out of my “office,” so I have lots to catch up on tonight. Tomorrow, 94% of my day will be spent in my apartment.

Tell me about a day in your life!
