A Random Day in the Life: 10.2.13

A few months ago, I asked what y’all wanted to see me post more about. Some of you said a “day in the life” post.

I hesitated, since a day in the life right now is not indicative of my normal routine…but I guess, like a lot of other blog stuff, it’s more like a snapshot of my life right now.

I’m currently freelancing but looking for another full-time job, so this is different from my “regular” routine. Once I’m back at a “9-5” (heavy emphasis on the quotations, I live in NYC), I’ll write another post like this about what a “9-5” day looks like for me.

3-4:30am: Wake up worried about the day ahead, text Ashley, thankful for a friend many time zones ahead of me who’s awake.

4:30-6:30am: Fall back asleep by some miracle!

6:30-7:00am: Wake up, shower.

7:00-7:15am: Walk Bailey.

7:15-7:25am: Get a wonderful french vanilla hot coffee from 6′ Donuts and a banana from my fruit cart dude.

7:25-9:45am: Prep for big meeting.

9:45-10:00am: Hair, makeup, getting dressed for meeting.

10:00-10:20am: Walk to meeting, talk to mom.

10:30-11:45am: BIG MEETING.

11:45am-12:30pm: Lunch with friend who works near meeting.

12:30-12:45: Walk home.

12:45-1:30: Work on follow-up emails, other freelance client work.

1:30-1:45: Walk Bailey again.

1:45-3:00: More working on freelance work, catching up on email.

3:00-3:30: Travel uptown for a Junior League meeting with communications and fundraising staff. I enjoy the volunteer work I do for Junior League tremendously, but it’s also great professional experience for me, too, and I’ve met a gazillion awesome people. Spend time on subway catching up on email.

3:30-5:15: Meeting. Knock out lots and lots of stuff.

5:15-5:30: Walk over to Soul Cycle, get changed.

5:30-6:15: Best 45 minutes of my day on the bike with Tomas.

6:15-6:30: Attempt to look like a normal human again.

6:30-6:50: Back on subway downtown, catching up on email.

6:50-7:00: Take a wonderful 10 minutes to just sit down near the Flatiron building and chill out.

It’s easy to live a really hectic life in this city and not realize the amazing opportunities the city offers, but yeah, it’s pretty awesome. When I take a minute to slow down, I really appreciate living here and can’t imagine living anywhere else in the world. Grace from Stripes and Sequins wrote a great post the other day on living a “calm life.” Some weeks I am go-go-go, but some weeks I completely retreat at night and spend lots of time in my yoga pants with Bailey. I try to say no when I can, but sometimes it’s hard to say no to the exciting things this city offers.

7:15:8:45: Stop by one of Uplift’s Workout+Wine events. I started off working with them as a blog partnership but have become actual friends with them because they are awesome, so stopped by to support them and hang out. It’s a wedding event, so I have zero reason to be there but to support my Uplift buddies and do a little networking. End up seeing Melissa and a former coworker and having lots of fun.

8:45-:9:15: Walk Bailey again.

9:15:9:45: Blog about my lame day.

9:45-???: Catch up on life. In my freelance life, I very rarely spend this much time out of my “office,” so I have lots to catch up on tonight. Tomorrow, 94% of my day will be spent in my apartment.

Tell me about a day in your life!

I feel the same as you about living in a city. I live in Chicago and I feel like I have to say yes to everything and get stressed when I miss a new show or a new restaurant, but I always end up having the most fun on nights where my husband stay in and relax. I need to find that happy medium.

I am currently working 9-5 but would love the freelance life. I wake up in the morning between 6:30-7, run either 4-5 miles HIIT or 6 miles leisurely… sometimes an early yoga class. Come home, make breakfast/pack my lunch/shower/drink coffee/get ready/watch GMA/go to work. Eat breakfast at my desk, work all day, then hopefully yoga or something fun with my friends at night. Now that I’ve started my blog, I’ve been spending a couple hours at night working on posts, reading blogs, and commented on my favorite blogs that I follow (like yours!).

I have been learning to appreciate the city lately as well. Growing up here makes you somehow oblivious to all it has to offer and how wonderful it truly is. I have been trying to instill this into my son since he too is already on the path of the city is just the city, the place he was born, the place we go to for lunch, dinner, where the big Bloomingdales is (lol) where the Rangers Knicks play, and where we go to see our close relatives all of the time. People travel here from all over the world and dream about traveling here. We are very lucky.

I just got back from a weekend in NYC and absolutely loved it. Back to normal life – up at 6, 15 min coffee/NPR/blu light break, workout, work, school, home by 11. Nights when I don’t have school alternate between date nights, friend nights, and TV nights. Just enough fun to stay sane through the last year of grad school.

I’m from England even though I have never been to NY I can pretty much guess how busy it can get. I work in London city centre and its hectic.

P.s That is why I refuse to spell Centre like this “Center” :p

I hear you! I am now freelancing full-time. It took me a while to get used to but now I am actually enjoying as I get to take on projects that inspires me as well as have the flexibility to take fitness classes in the middle of the day.

Day in the life — work outside the home mom of 8 year old twin boys…
My days are all almost alike:
2:00am — Lock cat in hall bath because she is annoying
4:35am — Alarm goes off. Feed and let dog out. Get ready to run.
    4:50- 6am — run. 7.4 miles is my default
6-7am — get ready for work. Eat breakfast — espresso, fruit, cereal or toast and hard boiled egg. Spend a few minutes with kids
7– 7:15 commute to work. For a big city, easy commute
7:15-4:45pm work. Bring lunch to eat with friends at work. Usually gazpacho, yogurt and a salad + a sweet treat or leftovers
4:45-5:10pm — commute to boys’ soccer practice. Do nanny handoff. Surf net, do emails, or read while waiting for boys at soccer.
6:00pm — soccer ends. Go home and put together a quick dinner, walk dog. Dinner is usually something like soba noodles with carrots and edamame or chicken enchiladas or pasta. Easy veggies on side (cherry tomatoes and cucumbers). Dessert is usually candy or ice cream.
7-8pm — Help boys with homework
8pm — Husband gets home from work
8:15-8:45 — read in bed with boys
8:45 — fall asleep reading book

My husband does all of the morning duties with the kids and the dog, but I have to be home by 6am so he can take the dog to dog park. He makes the boys lunches, gets them ready and takes them to school. I go to work early so I can be in charge in the evenings, while he works late. My job is more amenable to early hours than his, and we want to maximize time that one of us is with the kids.

Luckily we have a wonderful babysitter that picks the kids up from school, helps with laundry and other chores, and does fun stuff with the boys (yesterday it was decorate the house for Halloween).

You are so lucky to live in NYC. I would love to spend a year there (prob not more) but I love the idea of just stepping outside and being in the centre of the world! I used to feel that way when I live in London. So exciting to be where it all happens!

And now I’m lost in suburbia 🙂

I actually love this — and will have to do it on the blog sometime. My days are pretty boring and routine — Wake up, work out, go to work, take break, back to work, go home, hang out with family, dinner, desert, relax.

Then repeat 🙂 But I bet I can make it seem a bit more exciting 😉

Wow, it’s hectic indeed, in a good way. Sometimes it’s good to just stop, pause, and look at others and ask why everyone is moving so quickly. My day’s a little less hectic being in a smaller city and less commuting.

It must be fun to live in NYC. I live in Jakarta- Indonesia and we can not have that much activities as yours. The traffic is crazy here, it took me 4 hours to go and back from office, we also can not do a lot of walk here as the pollution and there is no friendly sidewalk here for people to walk not mention criminal rate here quite high . Wish someday I live in NY ..

I totally laughed at “blog about my lame day”. It’s exactly why I don’t tell people about my day because I know they’ll give me the “look”. But really, there is nothing wrong with it, it’s just different.

I was in NYC yesterday and I did not get lost on the subway.

Indeed that’s a lot of walk, I am really happy for you, congrats! I have been trying myself to coordinate different activities in the week, such as one day walking, another day running and another day biking, I feel better this way. Any tips for me (a beginner)?
