Running Doesn’t Solve Everything…But It Doesn’t Hurt!

As you know, I love running. It’s changed my life for the better in a lot of ways.

And it can turn around a lot about a bad day.

But you know that running is better than therapy thing? Sometimes, but sometimes you just need therapy. Running can make your perspective seem better, but it can’t actually solve your problems.

Nor is it actually medicine, although it can help long-term with a lot of what ails you.

This afternoon, I had a work luncheon with our team to celebrate accomplishing a big goal. And then, again, my stomach bothered me.

Last night, I’d texted with two of my coworkers about running this afternoon. It was going to be gorgeous, and I was so excited to take a little time at work to spend some time running with my favorite people.

But I came back from lunch, and my stomach was upset all afternoon…again. We started talking about when we’d change, and I thought I shouldn’t go.

I knew if I didn’t go, I’d go home in a really bad mood. As they started changing, I almost got teary. Screw it, I said, I’ll come. If I had to stop or turn around, I’d just do that.

There were a few parts where I thought I’d need to stop, but I ended up being okay.

I got back to work, and my stomach wasn’t any better, but it wasn’t any worse either, and I’d run 4 miles. Which is still a net win, right?

Great job for going for it and sticking in there. I struggle with GI issues and have found myself in similar situations. I’ve learned to stick close to home, take it easy and just take each mile as it comes. In the end even if your stomach doesn’t feel better my legs and self confidence usually did 🙂

I couldn’t agree more! I had a 12 hour day in the office yesterday and couldn’t get out of bed in the morning (a move I always regret because as hard as it is at dawn some days after a 10-12 hour day it feels darn near impossible to motivate!). It was dark when I left the office and late and windy so talked myself out of a run outside and just going home to dinner…gym bag in hand am walking home pass the gym and without letting myself think about it went in and hit the treadmill for 4 miles. best decision ever. Stress from work reduced and good mood gained.

Good for you – I would have said screw it and skipped the run. I’ve been doing that way too ofen these days and I really need to stop.

WIN! You knew you’d be bummed if you didn’t run. Glad you went. I’d rather regret doing something than not doing something and in the end you didn’t even need to utilize an emergency Starbucks bathroom. Way to make it happen, chica. Working out for me is my therapy or I guess I should say stress relief. I just feel like I’m able to let so many things go and be in the moment and focus on me and my body. It’s pretty dope.

Good for you for getting out there!
So long as I don’t feel worse at the end of a run, I’m happy and 99% of the time I always feel better.
I had to cut my run short yesterday because my tummy was NOT a happy camper. At all. I wish stomach’s were easier to read – cutting a run short (or skipping a run) because of tummy troubles sucks.

Good for you for getting out there when you really didn’t feel like it! We all have those days! I bet you felt better mentally knowing you got out on a beautiful day and got some miles in. I hope your tummy issues clear up.

GI issues are the worst! I can totally relate and in the past I was so stubborn and would push through. I have tweaked my diet so much and finally figured out what works for me to keep my stomach happy while running 🙂

Well done! I’ve just discovered your blog as I’m a new runner, I’ve felt like that on some mornings but always glad when I’ve gone & just ran, well more of a jog in my case. Hope your stomach is better now.

You’re a tough bit of stuff, well done to you for training with an upset stomach. I know many people who wouldn’t train even with only a slightly stuffy nose – drama queens lol

I really enjoyed that post. Running is better than therapy but sometimes you just need therapy – so, so true. I enjoy running, swimming, and walking as a way to relieve stress and keep my mind calm and positive. There really is nothing like it
