This post is part of the Soy Simple campaign. Read my disclosure here.
For this weeks’s Soy Simple post, I was asked to recreate a holiday meal with soy.
I was planning on making Brussels sprouts with bacon and maple syrup as a part of Christmas Eve dinner, so I decided to make an easy substitution: tofu bacon for regular bacon. I used Morningstar Veggie Bacon strips with soy. Otherwise, I followed the original recipe. I tasted while cooking, obviously, and the maple syrup definitely helped absorb any of the soy taste.
Let’s see how the fam reacts tomorrow… I hope nobody is reading this. I’d like to trick them and see what they say.
This post is, again, part of a giveaway to your local grocer. All you need to do is leave a comment, by Sunday (Christmas):
How do you use soy (if at all) in your holiday cooking?
Contest is only open to U.S. residents, 18 years of age and older. One entry, per person, per contest.
I used tofu to make a cream sauce for pasta. Hopefully my family will be converted to loving tofu as much as I do 🙂
YUM!
I will probably do a risotto with tofu bacon/eggplant and zucchini at our Christmas dinner. Lets see what the meat lovers will think!
I like to make cornbread with soy milk!
I’m my family’s official “layered salad-maker” for our Christmas get-togethers. I make one w/ “real” bacon and one w/ soy crumbles for the vegetarians in our family. Even the meat-eaters like the one w/ soy crumbles. =)
those brussel sprouts look great! i had tofu and green beans with peanut sauce tonight.. heavenly!
Ok so it’s just me but I’ve been making breakfast by mixing some tofu in with my scrambled eggs in the morning. I usually use it for dinner with stir fry or bbq tofu and like to mix it up by having it for breakfast–it’s light and all the protein fills me up!
I use soy milk to make power smoothies for my boyfriend and I in between family gatherings so we keep our energy up and try not to binge on all the holiday decadence!
I used turkey bacon instead of pork bacon in brussel sprouts over Thanksgiving and the family definitely took note, although they were polite/humorous about it. I’m making a different brussel sprout recipe for Christmas but it involves real bacon! I personally think turkey bacon is delicious though. I haven’t tried veg bacon. Good luck, I’m a bit cynical so I’m guessing your fam will prefer the real bacon, but maybe they won’t say a word!
@Julia: p.s. i know my response had nothing to do w/ your soy question…sorry!
Soy egg nog. That’s not really cooking tho.
I use soy milk in the mashed potatoes! Unflavored, unsweetened does the trick.
I am going to try your brussel sprouts with soy bacon recipe!
I use soy milk in my Christmas morning french toast, no one notices the difference.
I use soy milk for baking.
Pumpkin mousse with Silken tofu mixed in
I make a chocolate silk pie with tofu. I’ve fooled my coworkers with it!
I have not really used ANY soy in my cooking so far.. but could definitely see myself whipping something creative up with that SoyNog I have sitting in the fridge. Hmmm 🙂
Soy Egg Nog – its amazing & even a little healthy 🙂
Happy Holidays!
I use soy in a lot of breakfast drinks.
Sounds Delish! I use soy milk – but haven’t cooked much with it, but you’re inspiring me to try 🙂
Soy milk all the way.
As part of our “Christmas Eve” asian food dinner we had tofu stir fry, which I make at home all the time.
I use a lot of soy and I LOVE the fakin bakon 😉
I make a mean alfredo sauce using tofu and nutritional yeast instead of the usual cream, butter, and cheese.
OOOH! Do you have a link to the recipe? I do enjoy alfredo but my stomach definitely doesn’t.
@Theodora: The recipe I use is adapted from one on Nasoya’s website:
http://www.nasoya.com/tofu-u/tofu-recipe/alfredo-tofu-sauce/
Although, I use nutritional yeast instead of parmesan, and I use Earth Balance or a vegan margarine to make it vegan.
I love using soy milk instead of dairy!
